Viraemic suppressors, post-treatment suppressors and long-term non-progressors
There are various ways in which certain people who are not on HIV treatment still manage to suppress their HIV for a longer period of time.
Viraemic suppressors
These people maintain a low viral load with a CD4 count of more than 200, even though they are not taking anti-HIV drugs.
Post-treatment suppressors
These are people who have stopped taking their HIV medication, but whose virus remains suppressed.
Long-term non-progressors
Although these people have a viral load of more than 500, they are usually able to suppress the HIV virus themselves for several years.
All these variations lead researchers to believe in the possibility of developing a treatment that can suppress HIV for a longer period of time without HIV treatment.
