Why is HIV so difficult to cure?

Challenges in HIV cure research

There are several challenges in HIV cure research that make the search for a solution so difficult and time consuming. It is important to inform patients about the complexity of the virus and the long search for a solution.

The main challenges for HIV cure research are:

HIV is an effective but also very sloppy virus.

The virus mutates rapidly because errors often occur when its DNA is copied in CD4 cells. This makes it difficult to determine exactly which part of the CD4 cell's DNA is HIV DNA, which complicates research into effective treatments.

The dormant CD4 cells with HIV in the HIV reservoir.

HIV can hide in dormant CD4 cells, making it difficult to completely remove the virus from the body. The HIV reservoir is an area that researchers do not yet fully understand, which makes finding a cure more difficult.

HIV exploits the immune system.

Instead of being combatted by the immune system, HIV uses the immune system to copy itself. This reverse use of the immune system makes it particularly challenging to completely eliminate HIV without damaging the immune system itself.
