CRISPR-cas9

CRISPR gene technology is often described as a way to cut DNA with genetic scissors. It was originally invented by researchers in Osaka, Japan, in 1987. This technique allows the DNA of all living organisms to be modified. So that includes viruses and human beings.

Everyone has heard of genetically modified grain or cotton. This is often done using CRISPR technology.

In 2012, research teams developed a way to use the ‘cas9’ protein to make even more precise cuts and remove or add genes. Because HIV copies itself in the DNA of the CD4 cells it has infected, the hope is that the CRISPR-cas9 technique can be used to cut HIV out of the DNA.
